Bowel accidents can be distressing and have a significant impact on one’s daily activities as well as quality of life. It commonly occurs in women who have had an injury to the muscle surrounding the rectum after childbirth. This can occur early in life but most often becomes a problem later when the muscles begin to weaken. Once this problem has been identified, it can be addressed in a variety of ways. Surgical treatment options are available but are less commonly employed than more conservative options such as lifestyle modifications, pelvic floor muscle retraining and sacroneuromodulation.
